Martial Arts in the Library?
Read more about Relax Taiso in Richmond

Although Relax Taiso is primarily a training for Ki aikido students, community members who are not involved with the martial arts are finding that a regular program of concentrated movement is helping their health.
The "relax taiso" program, a five minute low-impact aerobic training program created by Koichi Tohei Sensei of Ki Society International, can be practiced by anyone of any age.   With its focus on rhythm and oneness of mind and body, regular practice of relax taiso can improve physical stability and mental concentration. When taught as a method of Ki training through KRI, the series of movements become powerfully relaxed-- the same type of relaxation practiced by students of Shin Shin Toitsu Kiaikido (Aikido with Mind and Body Coordination).

Richmond residents and other West County residents can find classes at the Richmond Public Library beginning in July!

At LEAP, a community reading program in Richmond, CA.,  students are meeting in the early morning for 30 minutes of training as a means to improve their concentration and test-taking skills. With the musical support of James Brown, students roll away their desks and move together to the count.  According to one student now practicing relax taiso on a regular basis:
I like the class because it's not fast paced. A lot of seniors or people like me, with disabilities, can benefit from it.  The breathing exercise has given me more discipline and concentration."

Jails Program

The Ki Research Institute provides Ki Development classes for individuals incarcerated in jail. These sessions provide participants the opportunity to examine their own understanding of power and strength and reconsider the efficacy of anger and tension. Through lecture and participation in Ki exercises, breathing and meditation, students experience a new possibility for responding and relating to the stress of incarceration.
